Silos are containers used for storing Materials of animal feed in containers or airtight places. Under no aerobic air with the intent to stop the process of decomposition of forage materials. Utilization not only in agriculture only. As an example of preserving animal feed.
Silos can be made with a variety of shapes depending on the location, capacity, materials used and the area of acreage available.
Various Shapes of Silo
Trench Silo, is a trench-shaped silo usually made on the hillside or on high ground. Making trench silo is by digging a square trench hole with a narrower bottom part of the top or a silo built in the form of a trench with a structure forming the letter V. The size can be made with a length of between 30-100 m, width between 4-6 m. The floor and wall of the silo may consist of soil or cement. We recommend that the silo floor tilted toward the foot of the hill and cemented slightly so that the silage does not mix with the soil. If not cemented, use rice straw as the base.
Pench Silo is a form of bunker Silo on a flat ground and located a little high so as not to stagnate water when it rains. The bunker wall can be from a plastic-coated board and one side can be made a door for removing the finished silo. The floor can be compacted soil or can also be a floor of concrete. Size Silo bunker shape can be made equal to the size of the moat ditch (length between 30-100 m, width between 4-6 m) or tailored to the needs.
Tower Silo, is a tower-shaped silo towering above the ground, but its top is tightly closed. Silo tower are usually made of steel or iron concrete equipped with special tools. Material and forage expenditures are made with special tools through windows that are also made specially. For non-manufactured silo towers, Material intake and outage manually. The cost of making silo tower manually or factory-made is quite expensive so less desirable by the breeders.
The advantage of this kind of silo is that the possibility of water and air permeation is very small. Thus reducing the risk of silage damage in it. They vary in size but generally are between 3-6 m in diameter and 12-24 m in height. Tower silos made by iron and concrete frame factory with a diameter of 7 m and a height of 30 m.
Pit Silo, is a cylindrical silo or well shapes in the ground. The advantage of this form silo is the cost of making relatively cheap than silo tower. The filling and compaction are relatively easy and the possibility of formation of air pockets is very small. The drawback is that picking up the silage is rather difficult because it looks like a well. Size of Silo Pit tailored to the needs.
Noteworthy in Making Silo
- Cultivated at higher ground and not too far from the cage for easy transport.
- Basic silos are made on one side to get a good water (drainage).
- The silo capacity should be large enough to accommodate all the forages to be preserved.
